{2jtab: Show Information}ARENA - LIVE BROADCAST As part of our Community Day, we're kicking off proceedings with a broadcast by Arena, RTÉ Radio 1's arts and popular culture show, live from our Space Upstairs!
Join us from 7pm on Friday, 10 May for a very special event - for one night only! Featuring music from The New Triangle (who play a full set at Project later that night!) and Crash Ensemble, interviews with New Triangle's Roger Doyle, artistic director of Project Arts Centre Cian O'Brien, writer and director Peter Sheridan, artist Niamh O'Malley and writer (and THISISPOPBABY co-founder) Philip McMahon. The New Triangle The New Triangle is a brand new musical ensemble comprising dynamic Congolese guitarist Niwel Tsumbu, composer and Aosdána member Roger Doyle and acclaimed singer/cellist Vyvienne Long. Following a very successful residency in Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray, where their performances were rapturously received, The New Trinagle embarks on its very first nationwide tour. Combining classical, African, electro acoustic and folk traditions to thrilling effect, this is a chance to experience virtuoso performers interpret and cut loose on each other's compositions. Crash Ensemble Crash Ensemble was founded in 1997 by composer Donnacha Dennehy; conductor and pianist Andrew Synott; and clarinetist Michael Seaver. Since its first sold-out concert in Dublin in the autumn of 1997, the group has attracted enthusiastic audiences for its particular blend of music, video and electronics. The group is interdisciplinary in outlook, and considers its sound engineers, technicians and video makers as much a part of the enterprise as the musicians. In 2012, Crash Ensemble were announced as music ensemble in residence at Project Arts Centre, bringing two of Ireland's most exciting companies together for a creative collaboratation that will push the boundaries of contemporary music. Peter Sheridan Playwright, screenwriter, actor and director, Peter is a former founder of Project Arts Centre and was Artistic Director of the centre with his brother Jim Sheridan in the early days. Peter has recently published Break a Leg - A Memoir, a book about his life and career which extensively covers his time at Project Arts Centre where he present and worked with artists such as Gabriel Byrne and U2. During Peter's long career he has seen first-hand the importance of artistic incubation spaces such as Project Arts Centre and the role they play in the development of Irish artists. Niamh O'Malley Niamh O'Malley is an Irish visual artist whose work incorporates painting and video installations. Her new work Garden, a commission for Project Arts Centre, continues her practice, which includes video, drawing and sculpture, through which she develops projects that interrogate the documentary tradition. Niamh O’Malley has made solo exhibitions in recent years at Ha Gamle Prestegard, Norway (2012), ‘Model’, Green on Red Gallery, Dublin, Ireland (2011), ‘Island’, Centre Culturel Montehermoso, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain (2010), ‘Frame, Glass, Black’ Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris, France (2010), ‘Echo’, Gaain Gallery, Seoul, Korea (2010), ‘No Distance’, Void, Derry, Northern Ireland (2009). Her work is included in the collections of the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Hugh Lane, Dublin City Gallery, the Arts Council of Ireland & Galleria Arte Moderna, Turin. O’Malley received a PhD in practice-led research from University of Ulster, Belfast in 2003. Philip McMahon A part of the Project Catalyst intiatives which supports developing artists, Philip McMahon is a playwright, director and co-founder of THISISPOPBABY. His first musical, Alice In Funderland, was commissioned and presented by the Abbey Theatre in 2012, and was tipped as one of the theatrical highlights of 2012, and was nominated for two Irish Times Theatre Awards.
